LEAD HOPEFULS

UAE are determined to win the AFC Asian Cup on home soil but will face stiff challenge against Bahrain in their opener tomorrow. Thailand remain Southeast Asian powerhouses and will be aiming to step up to the next level in UAE while India will be hoping to make an impact in Group A by sealing their first-ever knockout spot.

Title-holders Australia will be seeking a second consecutive crown but standing in their way in Group B are a trio of West Asian opposition. Syria will be eyeing a win after the Socceroos ended their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in the Continental Playoff while Palestine and Jordan will also be aiming for extended campaigns.

Debutants Kyrgyz Republic and Philippines are out to make a statement and this means traditional powerhouses Korea Republic and China PR can't take progression to the knockout stage for granted. All eyes will be on January 11 when China PR take on Philippines as managerial titans, Marcello Lippi and Sven-Goran Eriksson go head-to-head in what promises to be a thrilling contest.

SET TO THRILL

Asia's top ranked side, Islamic Republic of Iran, will be seeking a fourth AFC Asian Cup title but danger lies in the opposition they face in Group D. Iraq ended Team Melli's campaign in the quarter-finals four years ago while Vietnam are a team in form. Yemen aim to impress in their debut Finals, setting the stage for some exciting matches in the group.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar look to be the favourites but Group E will have its twists and turns as Lebanon and DPR Korea will be chasing their own targets in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019. Three-time champions Saudi Arabia have not won the tournament since 1996 while their three challengers have never lifted the AFC Asian Cup title, promising some exciting matches.
