January 21, 2019 #38/2019 Emirati Japanese drummers bring the beat to the Abu Dhabi fan zone An energetic group of Emirati Japanese drummers "Kharsha Drums" drew crowds to the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 fan zone with a performance full of rhythm and colour, played out against the backdrop of screens showing the tournament in full swing. The group, comprising five drummers of Emirati and Japanese heritage, thrilled fans in the beachside location with a traditional taiko percussion that filled the air with a pulsating beat. Speaking after the performance a member of the band, Tayammum Al Katheeri said: "Being an Emirati, a lot of people ask me how I am related to Japanese music and why I do it. It was my brother who initially introduced me and then I came across this group, which is cross cultural, and it has been the best thing ever since." "The AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 is bringing people together from all over the world so what better way to showcase unity and togetherness through this music, which does exactly that," he added. Tayammum's brother, Taryam, said Kharsha Drums aspires to promote a positive culture exchange between the UAE and Japan through their performance of the Japanese percussion art. "Since I was a kid, I have always wanted to play any kind of drums. Then I met group member Yotaro Matsutani three years ago in one of my university extracurricular activities and we decided to have a culture exchange. I taught him about the UAE culture, traditions and dialect, and he taught me how to play the Japanese drums," said Taryam. The group's performance at the AFC Asian Cup fan zone attracted crowds who enjoyed a unique art from the rich culture of Japan as the tournament continues to bring Asian fans together. "It was an interesting experience where we had the chance to interact with the Japanese supporters in the fan zone and it was particularly rewarding to see them respond positively to our interpretation of their culture," added Taryam.
